3Danimation Research

Use Of 3d imagey and animation in media.

in recent years 3d animation has become more frqecuntly used  in the media and has come to be used for a wide variety of purposes , including movies and television, advertising and video games.

                                                                      Film
3d software and animation have alot of advantages over  traditional effects for example  it can be  produced to show unrealstic effects in a beliveable manner or produce landscapes and events that would otherwise be to complex and expensive for a film crew to create , this not only saves a production company money but also allows its creators experiment with visual effects which could potentally boost the films viewings and help it to become a succsses.

History

3d animation has only come into play in the film industry in the past few decades but it has grown very rapidly and changed the film landscape and how we view the  films on a phenominal scope in such a small period of time.

the original 1982 film "tron" was one of the first films to show fully fledged 3d animation
althought it was only 20minutes worth of actuall film footage that was renderd at the time this was considerd an astounding succsses , it is now considerd to be one of the corner stones not just for the film industry but also for the achivments of 3d animation.

this is the tralier for the 1982 tron contaning some of the CGI footage.

Below them sitting on a bed are various smiling toys watching the pair, including a Mr. Potato Head, a piggy bank, and a toy dinosaur. In the lower right center of the image is the film's title. The background shows the cloud wallpaper featured in the bedroom.
the 1995 movie Toy story created by Diesny's pixar animation studios was the first all digital film using only computer generated imagery and animation very effectively for its time to,
however toystory was created on a budget of 30 million dollars but was only created  by a production staff of 10 pepole and approxometally 800,000 hours machine time and 114,240 frames of animation in total requireing 2-15 hours max spent on each frame.
becuase of this massive milestone aswell as its massive hit in the box office it is now considerd a historically and culturally important film as well as inspiring a whole new era of films espescially childrens films to be created using 3d animation technolagy.

the sequal to the 2001 movie lord of the rings  the 2002 movie the two towers both based on the books by J.R.R.Tolken  , the film was the first to photorealsticly create and show a charecter based on one of the storys main antogonists golam , all of these charecter's motions were created by the actor Andy serkis and  these actions where captured by a motion capture suit or mocop which translates the actors movments into digital information which can then be transferd onto a digital model and then renderd into the film , the lord of the rings was the first full film to show a product of the mocop suit but has been an is still used in many other forms of media including video games.

Video Games

in 1992 a very important year for video games with the release of titles like Dune 2 the first
Real time strategy game and castle wolfenstien 3D there was allso a game released called Alone in the dark released for DOS/VGA and windows/Mac the next year it was not only the first 3d horror survival game but also the first game to use the formentioned Mocop actors however unfourtunatly due to its lack ofthe games  succsess and popularity the rendering method would not become
popular until years later however the method and playstyle inspired many of the late 1990's and early 2000's most popular titles including The Quake Seris , Resident Evil Seris and the Final Fantasy Seris.

as 3d technolagy became more powerful and promenant in  the games industry many companys
began to exploit the new technolagy understanding that it would be an extremly powerful marketing tool and thus entire games consoles were produced and built to handle primative
3dtechnolagy this era  to gamers is know as the 64-bit era at the time this was the highest standard
of graphics which companys like nintendo would use to there advantage in marketing primarly adding 64 at the end of all there products encluding the console known as the Nintendo 64

Nintendo 64 console.

in 2011 rockstar and teambondi astrualia created the game LA norie a sndbox mystery-solving game
the game however uses a fairly new and inative  method of rendering to create the games graphics
team bondi used a method called motion scan filming and scanning the actors face from numerious angles this absorbs more information producing  very realastic facial features which is a very important part of the gameplay and what makes this game so noteable

                                                            Technolagy and software

3DS Max or AtuoDesk is a multi operating system program that is used in a variety of medias inclusing television, films and video games it provides intergarted 3d software designed
for fast creatation in modeling , animation ,rendering and composting tools, it can be modified with
Maxscripting and other third party software.

GoogleSketchup is a sketch based 2d/3d program  commonly used for arceitecture design its free and pro versions come intergrated with Google earth as well as Sketchup warehouse which allows users to share and download other models.

Cinema 4D created by Maxon it spesialises in  modeling ,rendering and animation with advanced charecter based options allowing advanced facial and hair tools aswell as advanced physics options and compatibilty for large amout of 3rd party software.

Busniess and Education

many 3d technolagys have been incopirated into bussniess and education for example shown above is an animation of a prehistoric creature created in cinema4d designd for a documentry/educational program showing the scale and beliviblty of the 3d software and how this can be used to simulate realistic images

here again shows us the scientific use for 3d technolagy as renderd above is a accurate model of an average lower jaw, this could be used to demonstrate the effects of dental problems or simply how each tooth works/responds in situations.

3d software can demonstrate what a finished product will look like to very suprising accuracy
and is a supirior way of pitching initial ideas for products than say traditional sketching , this method has been applied to a large number of products accross the bord from your average household appliances , to electronic equipment and even new models of transportaion like cars and areoplanes.

3D animation

Basic 3D modelling

here i have created a basic animation using cinema 4D's animation module, hear i have moved the
animation points which originated as a simple point A to B animation  and  modelled it so that it rolls over
the ramp and off at the other end, i also edited the condition of the sphere so that it rotates continuously
simulating the sphere rolling in motion.

this animation was created using C4D veriosn 9 with additional physic plugins including gravity ,
object solver and collision detection allthese were attached and modefied to the all the objects visible.

these cogs were individually animated to rotate at different speeds however they are not initially connected the illusion of synchronisation is created purely by invidiual animations.

Final Animation

this is my final animation it is a website advertisment for the film critic website cinemassacre.com which is mostly based around horror films , retro video games and board games i decided  to go with a horror film style animation to romote the main theme of the website.

the story board for the full animation including some of the minor details like ambient effects.
